This rocket, standing two stages tall, is competing in the 45,000 foot altitude category in the International Rocketry Engineering Competition. The purpose of this project is to apply advanced technical skills students learn in upper level classes to give them project experience they will need upon graduation. Thrust augmentation is the process in which the entrainment of a secondary flow mixing with a primary exhaust jet in a duct provide a higher thrust than the primary jet firing in isolation. For ducted rockets, the secondary flow consists of air entrained by an intake, duct, or shroud installed around the primary exhaust nozzle of the rocket. The goal of these modifications was to increase the specific impulse of the rocket compared to a non-ducted, conventional alternative, effectively increasing both power and efficiency. The project started in the Fall of 2017 when the team has been able to design and construct its first test vehicle, Gryphus 1, which launched six times in the Spring 2018 semester ¬-- the most launches of any ERFSEDS rocket in a single semester. The data collected from these flights showed a 10 percent increase in the specific impulse of the vehicle. Since then, the team has been able to design, build, and launch two more test vehicles, Gryphus 2 and 3. Gryphus 2, or G-2, started flying in the Fall of 2018 with the intent of continuing the mission of Gryphus 1 at higher velocities and studying the effects of different sized ducts. Gryphus 3 (G-3) began flight in the Spring of 2019 with the goal of demonstrating the possibility of thrust augmentation on a larger high-powered rocket. G-3 was ultimately retired in the Fall 2019 semester, having completed four flights testing differently sized ducts on each flight. This team’s primary focus is on designing and creating a safer, more efficient, cost-effective, and compact recovery system able to withstand supersonic forces. Additionally, Project Zephyr is designing and building the launch vehicle to house and test the recovery systems. Project Zephyr encourages members to think out of the box while learning the skills to research, design, and communicate in and on many different types of unique situations. Started in 2016, the team constructed and flew several launch vehicles for testing and research in order to better prepare for a fully bladed flight. Prometheus focuses on designing and manufacturing experimental solid rocket motors. Prometheus currently manufactures and tests ammonium perchlorate composite propellant (APCP). Students who have joined this team not only gain experience designing and mixing APCP motors, but also gain first hand experience with data acquisition systems (DAQ) during test firings. The team revamped all standard operating procedures in the Fall of 2021, along with mixing a small motor following the updated instructions. Currently the team is fine-tuning the motor testing process to make future motors easier to test. Additionally, the team is working on a new DAQ system for test fires. Having completed preliminary characterization, Harbard is currently designing the engine system with plans to manufacture and test in Spring of 2021. The ensuing semesters after a successful test will then be dedicated to airframe design, manufacture, and flight. The engine will run on liquid oxygen/rp-1 and produce 1000 pounds of thrust. In less than a year, the Pathfinder lead is able to take this team of students students with little to no experience with rocketry and teach them how to build a rocket that is eligible to compete in the FAR 5/10/25 the following summer. Designed specifically to shape the skills of those involved, students who worked on Pathfinder left the project as leaders who gained knowledge of the fundamentals of modern high powered rocketry. Pathfinder went through 10 iterations, with the last being finished in 2022. (Advanced Composites Manufacturing and Engineering) is ERFSEDS' composite manufacturing support and research project. A.C.M.E. provides manufacturing support for all of ERFSEDS' other rocketry projects, assisting in providing, finishing, and assembling airframes. A.C.M.E.'s goal is to establish the infrastructure and knowledge base needed to manufacture all parts in-house instead of using commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) parts. A.C.M.E. is proud to have worked with materials provided to us from TCR Composites and Bally Ribbon Mills. Project A.C.M.E. has worked extensively with Project Artemis since Artemis Mk IV on manufacturing and developing their 2-stage competition rocket. Artemis boasts the usage of carbon fiber tubes wound in-house on the X-Winder, our own filament winder.
